# How do I show up in Google Maps and local search results?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change where a searcher is standing, so the work goes into relevance (a complete, accurate Business Profile with the right categories and services) and prominence (reviews, links, mentions and a website that backs up the profile). Keep every detail true and consistent, and keep the profile active.

## What decides who shows up in the map results?

Google's own help page on [improving your local ranking](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091) names three factors:

- **Relevance**: how well your profile matches what the person searched for. Categories, services, description and your website all feed this.

- **Distance**: how far you are from the searcher, or from the place they named in the search. You cannot change this.

- **Prominence**: how well known you are, online and off. Google mentions reviews, links and articles about you. The same page says review count and score factor into local ranking.

That tells you where to spend your time. Make the profile as relevant and complete as the facts allow, and build prominence steadily.

## How do I set up a Google Business Profile properly?

Start by claiming and verifying the profile, then work through each field. Google's [guidelines for representing your business](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) are strict, and breaking them can get the profile suspended, so read them once in full.

| Field | What to put | Common mistake |

| Business name | Your real-world name, exactly as on your signage and invoices | Adding keywords or towns to the name |

| Primary category | The one category that best describes the core of the business | Picking a broad category, or the one you wish you ranked for |

| Other categories | A few that describe real, significant parts of what you do | Adding every loosely related category |

| Address or service area | An address if customers visit you; a service area if you go to them | Showing a home address, or using a virtual office |

| Hours | Real opening hours, plus special hours for holidays | Leaving them out of date |

| Services and products | Each service with a short description and a price or "from" price where you can | Leaving the section empty |

| Description | What you do, for whom and where, in normal sentences | A list of keywords |

| Photos | Real photos of your work, premises, team and vehicles | Stock images |

| Website link | The page that matches the profile, with a tracking tag | A link to a broken or generic page |

## What should I post and update each month?

A profile that is looked after shows it. A light monthly routine is enough for most businesses:

- Add new photos of recent work.

- Publish an update or offer when you have something real to say: a new service, a seasonal slot, a finished project.

- Reply to every new review (see [how to get Google reviews the right way](https://www.auraicpulse.info/guides/get-more-google-reviews)).

- Check hours before bank holidays and change them if you close.

- Read the messages or calls section so enquiries from the profile do not go unanswered.

## How does my website support my local ranking?

Your website is where Google checks that your profile is real and relevant. Use the same business name, address and phone number, written the same way, on your site as on the profile. Give each main service its own page, and mention the areas you serve in normal sentences with real examples of work there. Add [LocalBusiness](https://schema.org/LocalBusiness) structured data with your name, address, phone, hours and profile links. Link the profile to the most relevant page, not always the homepage, and add a tracking tag so you can see how many visits the profile sends (our guide on [tracking enquiries](https://www.auraicpulse.info/guides/track-marketing-enquiries-utm) explains how).

## Do directory listings still matter?

A handful of accurate listings still help, mostly as consistent evidence that you exist where you say you do. Focus on the places your customers and the big platforms read: [Bing Places](https://www.bingplaces.com/), [Apple Business Connect](https://businessconnect.apple.com/) for Apple Maps, the main national business directory in your country, and the directories and associations of your own trade. Skip the hundreds of low quality directories sold in bulk packages.

## What gets a Google Business Profile suspended?

The most common causes are breaches of the guidelines above: keywords stuffed into the business name, an address where you do not really operate (such as a virtual office or a mailbox), more than one profile for the same business at the same place, and fake or incentivised reviews. If you are suspended, fix the cause first, then follow the reinstatement steps in Google's help centre.

## Checklist: local SEO and Google Business Profile

- Profile claimed and verified, name exactly as in the real world

- Right primary category and only relevant extra categories

- Address or service area set correctly, hours and holiday hours current

- Services listed with descriptions and prices or price guidance

- Real photos added every month

- Every review answered

- Name, address and phone written the same way on the website

- LocalBusiness structured data on the website

- Listed on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and a few relevant directories

## Questions people also ask

Can I rank in a town where I do not have an address?

You can set a service area that covers towns you travel to, but distance still counts, so you will usually show more strongly near your real base. Pages on your website about real work in those towns help show relevance.

Should I add keywords to my Google Business Profile name?

No. Google's guidelines say the name should match your real-world name. Adding keywords can get the profile suspended, and competitors can suggest an edit that removes them.

How often should I post on Google Business Profile?

There is no official number. Post when you have something real to show, such as a finished job, a new service or a seasonal offer, and aim for a steady rhythm you can keep, for example every week or two.

Do I still need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

Yes, for most businesses. The profile gets you seen, but the website is where people check prices, proof and details before they enquire, and where Google confirms your profile is relevant.
