# How do I get more Google reviews without breaking the rules?

Ask every customer, at the moment they are happiest, with a direct link that opens the review form, and make it a routine rather than a campaign. Do not pay for reviews, offer anything in return, write them yourself or only ask the customers you expect to be happy: Google's policies forbid it, and consumer law in the EU and elsewhere treats fake or misleading reviews as an unfair practice. Reply to every review, good and bad.

## Why do Google reviews matter so much?

Three reasons. People read them before they choose. Google says review count and score factor into local search ranking ( [Tips to improve your local ranking](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091)). And AI assistants lean on reviews and profiles when they recommend a business, because those are independent of your own website (see [showing up in AI answers](https://www.auraicpulse.info/guides/show-up-in-chatgpt-and-ai-answers)). A steady stream of recent, real reviews helps on all three.

## When and how should I ask for a review?

Ask everyone, at the moment the value is clearest to them, in the channel you already use with them. The review form is found in your Business Profile, where Google gives you a link to share with customers. Copy it once and keep it handy.

| Business type | Best moment to ask | How |

| Trades and home services | At handover, when the customer sees the finished job | In person, then a text with the link that evening |

| Restaurants and cafes | With the bill or on a card at the table | A QR code that opens the review form |

| Events and weddings | A few days after the event, when photos come in | An email with the link and a thank you |

| Clinics and salons | After the appointment, once the result shows | A text or email the same day |

| Professional services | When a milestone is delivered | A short personal email |

Keep the request short and personal. For example: "Thanks again for having us in, Mary. If you have a minute, a Google review helps other people in Galway find us: [link]. Thank you." Put the same link in your confirmation or thank-you emails so it goes out every time, not only when you remember.

## What is not allowed when asking for reviews?

Google's policy on [prohibited and restricted content](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114) covers fake engagement, and the law adds its own rules. Stay clear of all of these:

- Paying for reviews, or offering a discount, gift, prize draw entry or anything else in return for one.

- Asking only the customers you expect to be happy, or screening people first and sending unhappy ones somewhere else (often called review gating).

- Writing reviews yourself, or asking staff, family or friends to review you as customers.

- Buying reviews, swapping reviews with other businesses, or using services that post them.

- Offering something to have a negative review changed or removed.

In the EU, submitting or commissioning fake reviews, and claiming reviews come from real customers without taking reasonable steps to check, are unfair commercial practices under consumer law ( [Directive (EU) 2019/2161](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2019/2161/oj)). The UK and the US have similar rules.

## How should I reply to reviews?

- **Reply to every review**, positive and negative, within a few days.

- **Be specific.** Thank them for something real: "Glad the new stairs came out the way you pictured."

- **Keep negative replies calm and short.** Acknowledge the experience, state facts without arguing, and offer to talk directly. Future customers read your reply more than the complaint.

- **Never share personal details** in a reply, such as what someone bought, their address or their account. It is public, and in the EU it can breach data protection law.

## What if I get a fake or abusive review?

If a review breaks Google's policies, for example it is from someone who was never a customer, it contains hate or personal information, or it comes from a competitor, report it from your Business Profile and follow Google's steps. Do not retaliate or reply in anger. If it stays up, a calm, factual reply shows readers how you handle problems.

## Can I show my Google reviews on my website?

Yes, and it is a good idea: embed them or quote them with the reviewer's first name. Be aware that Google does not show review stars in search results for reviews a business publishes about itself on its own site, under its review snippet rules for businesses and organisations ( [Google Search Central blog](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2019/09/making-review-rich-results-more-helpful)). Show them for people, not for stars. See [a homepage that converts](https://www.auraicpulse.info/guides/homepage-that-converts) for where proof goes on the page.

## Checklist: getting reviews the right way

- Review link copied from your Business Profile and saved

- Link in confirmation and thank-you emails, and a QR code where it fits

- Every customer asked, at the moment the value is clearest

- No payments, discounts, draws or gating

- No reviews from staff, family or swaps

- Every review answered, without personal details

- Policy-breaking reviews reported, not argued with

## Questions people also ask

Can I offer a discount in exchange for a Google review?

No. Offering anything in return for a review breaks Google's policies, and in the EU it can also breach consumer protection law. Ask without an incentive.

Can I ask only my happy customers for reviews?

No. Selectively asking only customers you expect to leave positive reviews is against Google's policies. Ask everyone, and handle unhappy customers directly and well.

Can I delete a bad Google review?

You cannot delete a review yourself. You can report it if it breaks Google's policies, and you can reply. A calm, useful reply often does more for your reputation than removal would.

How many Google reviews does a business need?

There is no magic number. What helps is a steady flow of recent, real reviews compared with the businesses you compete with locally. Make asking a routine and the number takes care of itself.
