# Should I hire a marketing agency, a freelancer or do it myself?

Do it yourself when you have more time than money and the work is simple; hire a freelancer when you need one skill done well and can manage the plan yourself; hire an agency when you need several skills working together and someone accountable for the whole plan. Each can work or fail. What matters most is a clear goal, ownership of your own accounts and a monthly report you can check against enquiries and sales.

## How do the options compare?

| | Do it yourself | Freelancer | Agency |

| What you pay with | Your time, plus tools | Day rate, project fee or small retainer | Monthly retainer or project fee |

| Best for | Simple needs, tight budget, owner who enjoys it | One skill done well: design, ads, copy, video editing | Several skills that need to work together |

| You manage | Everything | The plan and how the pieces fit | The goals and approvals |

| Main risk | It slips when the business gets busy | Availability, and gaps between skills | Paying for layers of people, slow changes |

| When it stops working | Your time is worth more elsewhere | You spend more time coordinating than working | Reports stop linking to enquiries and sales |

There is a fourth option too: hiring someone in house. It gives you the most control and the most knowledge of the business, but it also means a salary, tools, training and management, and one person rarely covers strategy, content, ads and search equally well.

## When does doing it yourself make sense?

When the business is young, the budget is small and the marketing is simple: a Google Business Profile, a clear website, a few posts a week and asking for reviews. Many owners do this well, and doing it yourself for a while teaches you what works for your customers, which makes you a better buyer later. The free guides from Google and the platforms cover most of the basics (start with our guide to [getting more website traffic](https://www.auraicpulse.info/guides/how-to-get-more-website-traffic)). It stops making sense when marketing is always the thing that slips, or when an hour of your time is worth more doing the work you sell.

## When is a freelancer the right choice?

When you know what you need and it is mostly one skill: a website rebuild, a set of ads, product photos, editing your videos. A good freelancer can be excellent value because you pay for the work, not for account management. The trade-off is that you are the project manager. If you need a designer, a copywriter, an ads specialist and someone to report on it all, you end up coordinating four people.

## When is an agency worth it?

When you need several skills working to one plan, and you want one party accountable for the result. A good agency brings strategy, content, ads and reporting together, covers holidays and sick days, and has seen what works across many businesses. The risks are paying for layers of people who do not do the work, being handed off to junior staff after the sale, and long contracts. Small agencies where you deal directly with the people doing the work avoid some of that; large ones bring more specialists.

AuraicPulse is an agency, so weigh this guide with that in mind. We are a good fit for businesses that have traded for a year or more and want social media, short video, ads and search handled together; we are not the right choice for businesses that have not launched yet or want the cheapest option. Our plans and who they suit are on the [media page](https://www.auraicpulse.info/media).

## What should I ask before I hire anyone?

- Who exactly will do the work each week, and will I deal with them directly?

- Who owns the ad accounts, social accounts, website and content? (It should be you.)

- What is the minimum term, and what is the notice period after that?

- What will I get each month, in numbers: posts, videos, reports, calls?

- What will you report on, and will it include enquiries and sales by source? (See [tracking which marketing brings enquiries](https://www.auraicpulse.info/guides/track-marketing-enquiries-utm).)

- Can you show work for a business like mine, and results you can back up?

- How do you use AI, and does a person check everything before it goes out?

- What is not included, and what costs extra?

- What happens to my accounts, files and data if I leave?

## What are the warning signs?

- **Guaranteed rankings.** Google's own advice on hiring help says [no one can guarantee a number one ranking](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/do-i-need-seo).

- **Accounts in their name.** If they own your ad account or page, leaving becomes painful.

- **Reports that only show likes, reach and followers**, never enquiries or sales.

- **Long lock-in contracts** with no clear exit, before you have seen any work.

- **Bought followers, fake reviews or link packages** offered as growth.

- **Vague answers** about who does the work or what is included.

Whoever you choose, start with a few quick, measurable pieces of work before a long commitment, such as an [SEO audit](https://www.auraicpulse.info/seo-audit) or a first month with a clear goal, and judge the relationship on those.

## Checklist: choosing who does your marketing

- A clear goal written down, measured in enquiries or sales

- An estimate of your own hours and what they are worth

- The skills you need listed: one or several?

- You own every account, file and piece of content

- Monthly deliverables and reporting agreed in writing

- Minimum term and notice period understood

- A short first piece of work before a long commitment

## Questions people also ask

How long should I give a new marketing provider?

Long enough for the work to take effect: a few weeks for fixes and ads to show early signals, and around three months for content and search. Agree what progress should look like at each point before you start.

Should I sign a 12 month marketing contract?

Only if you have seen enough of the provider's work to trust them for a year, and the terms let you leave if they do not deliver. A shorter first term, then month to month, is common and fair to both sides.

Can I mix doing it myself with outside help?

Yes, and it often works best. Many owners keep the things only they can do, such as filming on the job or answering enquiries, and hand over planning, editing, ads and reporting.

Who should own my ad accounts and social media pages?

You should. Give your provider access as a partner or user, and keep ownership and billing in your business's name, so you keep everything if you change provider.
